Farewell Bobby
As the 2010 season draws to
an end, so does the career of legendary Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox. Over
his 25 year career with the Braves, Bobby’s accomplishments are staggering.
Bobby led the Braves to six 100+ win seasons, an unprecedented fourteen consecutive
Divisional Championships, five League Championships and an unforgettable 1995
World Series Championship. He is a three-time Manager of the Year and ranks
fourth all-time in wins among MLB managers. However, the numbers don’t
tell the whole story of Bobby Cox, who has done it all with class and style,
earning the respect and admiration of players, coaches and fans throughout
baseball. We invite our fans to share their memories and farewells for Bobby
with a comment here.
Bobby Cox - The Final Season 
Bobby Cox is without a doubt one of the greatest managers of all time. I hate to see him go. Whenever this season does end, its going to be a very sad day. Its been an honor and a pleasure to have been able to watch Bobby and the Braves my entire life and to actually remember most of the division titles and the World Series (I was only 2 when all this started, I’m 21 now). I’ve enjoyed the ride. Good-bye Bobby, I wish you nothing but the best in your retirement!

Hi Bobby I will miss you greatly. I have received choptalk for years and have been a fan since 1957. Number 41 was my favorite brave. I am so frustrated the way my braves are performing but still rooting for them.

I was one of those little kids who hung around Atlanta Stadium just to get in free at the end of the game during the early 70’s. I never miss seeing a game if I can. Enjoy your retirement Bobby, you have earned it!
Bobby, In October of 1991, we were on our way to the hospital to have our little boy. People were doing the Tommahawk chop as we were going to the hospital & we found out after the fact that the Braves had clinched the National League division that night & were on their way to the World Series. Our baby is now 19 & he has been watching you since he was about 2 years old. Our family has enjoyed watching you and watching you defend your players. I wish my son had a coach like you when he was playing baseball. What a different a great coach can make! I believe that the Braves are losing a tremendous asset and your shoes will be hard to fill. Integrity is something few men have but I believe you have been more than blessed with that quality. I have seen pictures of my parents holding me as a 2 month old, waving my arm doing the tomahawk chop while watching the 1991 World Series. I grew up as a boy, only knowing Braves dominance. Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and Jones were all I ever knew. All this has changed, and now you, Bobby Cox, are the last to go (pending Chipper’s knee). I have vague memories of the 1995 World Series. Win another one for us, Bobby.

Bobby, you have been managing the Braves since before I was born, and so I can truly say that I cannot remember a time when you weren’t in that bullpen. I’ve grown up a Braves fan and I will be a Braves fan till the day that I die, but it will not be the same without you. It’s not easy to find a manager like you. Numbers aside, you care about and fight for your players in a way that can never be replicated. I think I can speak for most fans when I say that it’s with a sad heart and a fear for next season that we send you off. Living in California, I was drawn to the class of the Braves organization, thanks in large part to you. You’ve helped keep this team honorable, talented, and stable. The Braves were the only thing that got me through school days so I could come home and watch at 4pm Pacific.

I have been a Braves fan since I was 8 years old and saw my first game in Fulton County in 1988. However, I don’t really know the Braves as having anyone manage other than Bobby, and it will be very strange watching the games and not hearing him call out to the players with all the nicknames.
I am gonna miss you, the Braves will miss you, and Major League Baseball and it’s fan will miss you. Whoever takes over the role as manager for the Braves has the biggest shoes to fill ever.

I even took my mom to see you play in atlanta 2 yrs ago for her birthday. Not seeing you in the dugout next year is going to be sad. But once a braves fan always a braves fan. Ive stood behind you guys thru the bad years and all the good years. Watched my first world series when the braves won. It was a great experience. I wish you the best of luck and hope that your enjoy your time away from the Great American Ballpark. I grew up an Atlanta Braves fan. I only known Bobby Cox as the only manager for the Braves. It will not be the same with out Bobby Cox next season. I have been a fan since I was 8 years old starting in the early 90’s when the Dynasty begun. Thanks for all the years of service to this team and I’ll miss you next season. Hopefully the Braves can get to the postseason!
Bobby Cox was a good manager, but he won 14 straight division championships and O-N-E World Series. During those years, he could have one maybe 7 World Series. His players loved him. He had a great pitching staff. The starting rotation was lights out when called upon. Smoltz, Maddux, Glavin and I can’t remember the 4th starter. So good luck Bobby in your retirement.

Bobby, you have no idea what an influence you have had on my life. I am 17 years old, but I’ve been watching Braves games since I was in a crib. You and your Braves teams have given meaning to my summers. I always went to my grandma’s house to watch games on TBS and hear Carey, Sutton, Wieren, and Simpson call them. When she died in 2006, it was the first year since 1990 that you didn’t make the playoffs, and I don’t believe that was a coincidence. But this year is different. You’ve shown why you are one of the best managers in history and I pray the Braves send you out on top. You are irreplaceable as the face of this organization, and know you will be missed in the dugout. All the wins, ejections, decisions, etc.. will be memories forever etched in my head. I wish I could be in Atlanta this week, but unfortunately I can’t. But know I will be supporting you from my home and will wait to see what happens in the playoffs.
I can’t even imagine watching a Braves game without knowing you are out there leading our team. I have enjoyed being a fan of you and the Braves. I will always have a huge passion for the game of baseball, and a big reason is because of you. It was easy to love and support my team, because I could see how much you loved and supported each and every player you coached. I was a Braves fan even in the rotten years.It is easy to be a fan and actually feel part of the team from the announcers right to Bobby.He will truly be missed and it is hard to imagine the team with another manager.It will be an adjustment for of us as fans to see someone else argue with the umpires and get tossed. You and I are about the same age. I’ll catch up again on 10/17. My middle son shares that birthday with me. All my boys (God has blessed me with 3), my wife and I have watched as you have guided the Braves and worked within the organization to create a history that will be unparalleled in all of sports performance.
The things that have stood out above the numbers are your steady hand on the helm, your fire to defend the players and the club and the class and good humor you have managed to maintain even through the times that had to be most disappointing and personally hurtful to you.
Thanks for your example and for giving us all a truly great opportunity to share the blessing that your career has been.

Bobby, I’m a lifelong Braves fan, and lived in Atlanta during some very exciting times in the early and mid-nineties. I attended a bunch of NLCS and WS games that I’ll never forget. In 1993 I took my 5 year old nephew to his very first Braves game. He played little league all thru school, and in 4th grade wrote in his “what I am going to be when I grow up essay” that he would play for Bobby Cox and the Atlanta Braves. The teacher told him to re-write it and make it ‘realistic’, and he refused. You know him. His name is Craig Kimbrel.
Seeing him fulfill his childhood dream, and especially to get to play for you has been one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced in my life.
I cannot thank you enough for your years with the Braves. You will be missed! Enjoy your retirement!

Bobby….My best Braves memory is when my Mom, who is now deceased, and me flew up to Cleveland (her old hometown) to attend Game 5 of the 1995 World Series….unfortunately, we lost that game, but Game 6 was the next day in Atlanta….we boarded an airplane and flew from Cleveland to Atlanta and went right to the stadium to cheer on our Braves!!! As you know, we won that game, 1-0, behind the bat of David Justice!! My mom screamed so much and so loud that she lost her voice for a few days!! It was a magical time — mother and daughter going to 2 games together in 2 different cities and being together to celebrate a first-ever sports championship in Atlanta….I’m sure my Mom is looking down from heaven and smiling as you wind down your career — and is hoping we’re back in the post-season!! I will be in the stands on Sat., Oct. 2, with my 13-year-old son, to show appreciation for your leadership over these years — he is a huge Braves fan like his Grandmother!! Hey bobby thanks for being an inspiration to many generations of children. Its great having a great ball club to rally around with friends, family and even strangers. Its tough to put into words the great experiences I have shared with my dad, brothers and friends. Its been a great season to follow and its been great following the braves my whole life. My mom still talks about staying up with me as a baby watching sid slide into home.

I feel so lucky that i grew up being a fan of the team that you managed for the past 2 decades. Everyone sees you got your players back, from Marquis Grissom to Martin Prado you aways stuck up for anyone in a Braves uniform. In a league that juggles managers around frequently you stuck around for the long term and won 14 straight division titles and a World Series Championship in ’95. You brought your passion and love for the game to the ballpark everyday and more often than not led the Braves to a victory. Its sad youre leaving and the Braves wont be the same without you, but i just wanted to personally thank you for all youve done for the organization. You’ll be missed and never forgotten for youve changed the organization forever. Everyone knows the Braves are Bobby’s team even if youre not in the dugout. Growing up in South Texas we did not have access to any baseball teams that you would expect (ie Astros & Rangers), with TBS we got a chance to watch the Braves day in and day out. I remember me and my grandpa gathering around the tv watching the games on the weekdays and on Sunday afternoons. My grandfather passed a few years ago shortly after Christmas, but we would still watch what little Braves games we could find and talk about how you were still coaching. Im sure he still watches from above and its not going to be the same watching the Braves without you.

I have been a Braves fan for 27 years since I was 5 and can remember my Dad and brothers cheering for the Atlanta Braves. What a great manager you have been for our team. I love how you coach with such passion and how you stick up for your guys and not afraid to get ejected lots of times and to hear you cheer on your players when they are at bat from the dugout “Come on Frenchy!!”, “Come on Boogy!!”, “Come on Chip!” It was awesome to see how respected you were from all the other clubs around the league giving you parting gifts/retirement gifts.

many years have passed since october 1991 when i meet the braves.. i was 11 years old now im 30 and still being a brave fan.. you will be missed a lot, i never been to atlanta, im from mexico, so i hope we (the braves) could make it to postseason and ill bet i will spend all my savings to go there ,so enjoy youre retirement best wishes for u an ur loved ones…. and hope i can see u in the stadium it will be a great xperience….

I have been a Braves fan since 1991. I was 6 years old at the time. I was born and raised in California but thanks to TBS, I was able to watch you boys play all the time. From the days of Maddux, Smoltze, Glavine and Avery to now with Heyward and BMac. In 2005, I was lucky enough to take a vacation to Atlanta to spend a week watching you coach. I was in the stands the days when Frenchie and BMac made their major league debuts!!! One of the best moments of my life!!! I am going to miss being able to hear you from the duggout cheering on all your players while they are up to bat. I, as a kid really enjoyed you. I’ve only liked baseball since last year when my dad showed me a few games of the 2009 world series. I am very happy i was able to know baseball and like it. Braves have really impressed me this season and i am hoping for them to go to th division, championships, and world series. 🙂 Even one year has really impressed me of how good a manager you were. I’ve never missed a single game (or atleast the scores) of the season. Every game was like watching a really good movie. Thank you so much Booby for all you’ve done for the Braves and for the Braves country 🙂

bobby..thx for the memories…i am so excited about being there sunday ,,,wish i could saturday, but not possible. my mother is 90 years old and got me started watching and listening on the radio to the braves…she also has the folks out at The Oaks/(retirement and nursing facility/o’burg sc ) enjoying the games.the braves have been a grand conversation piece around our kitchen table for many years. we do not get to many games. could not let another year pass without coming/wish we could bring mama/since could not, i did not want to miss your last regular season game! I am broken hearted that prado is so badly hurt. i hope that he and chipper can go to the postseason games by way of appointing them co-coaches.. seems you have to cut the team down, i was not very sure how that worked…they deserve to be there. Glauss saved alot of weeks too, when no one was hitting. its been a strange season–made it interesting ’cause look where we are now.

Thanks for the way you handled your players all these years. It’s a tribute that you never put any player down no matter how bad of a game they had. Also, no current or ex player ever has any bad words for you. Always a cheerleader from the dugout which is just great. I love the way you’ve always stood up for your players. Baseball has become a business but you personify the good old days of baseball. I’m the same age as you so I guess you want to slow down a little but I’m sure you’ll be around the Braves. I live in Germany and became a Braves fan in 1996, when I stayed in Georgia for a while at my former exchange family. When I was an exchange student 3 years before, they hosted me near Cleveland so we went to see Tribe games, but in ’96 during a series vs. the Astros, your Braves team really impressed me. I gladly think back to the ‘golden ninetees’ with Pendleton, Justice, Glavine and so on. Now, with Chipper and you still there, Braves games remind me of my time in the States – good memories, and often good baseball, too!
I wish you a perfect carrer end, I’m sure you can lead the boys to the postseason. No matter how far we’ll make it – you are a great person and true representative of the game we all love so much, thank you for so many great games. Hope you stay healthy and can enjoy lots of years together with your loved ones!!!

My favorite memory is of my grandaughter Stephanie at age three. She was a friend of your grandaughter Kayley, and one night when we were waiting a game we were saying something about about Bobby Cox, and Stephanie stood up and said ‘that is not Bobby Cox it is Kayley’s grandpa.” To this day we are all Braves fans, and Stephanie is one of your bigest fans.

Bobby was the player’s manager. I’ll miss hearing him say “come on kid!” during every game.
Although I’m a Yankees fan, I always liked watching Bobby’s Braves, especially when they were shown on TBS Superstation nationwide coverage.
Bobby’s one of the greatest managers that baseball’s had, and we’re all lucky to have seen him. Where others have come and gone, Booby has remained a steady presence leading the Braves for the past 25 years, and numbers alone don’t tell the whole story.
He will definitely be missed, and it’s gonna be strange to watch the Braves on TV and not see him in the dugout…
Oh, and by the way, anyone else think that the umpires are reeeeeally gonna miss him?? 🙂

I began watching Bobby and the Braves in 1990 when I was 11. His dedication to the sport he loves and the players he manages is unparalleled. For all 158 times he has been ejected and many more times, he has defended his players to keep them from being ejected. Each night, you can hear him cheering his players on; even when the Braves are being crushed by the opponent. I met Bobby in 2000 while working as a freelance journalist and I can honestly say, he is the nicest person I have ever met in baseball. I cried when I learned Bobby would be retiring after this season and will cry again when his legendary career in baseball comes to an end. Bobby, we love you so much and have been honored to call you our manager all these wonderful years. Thanks Bobby!

I have been a Braves fan since 1987 I was 10 years I think we finished in last place for six straight years before you went back in the dugout. There has been many games that have brought so much excitement to my life, like the Sid Bream slide. I think you have one of the greatest managers all time. I?ve been a lifelong fan of the Atlanta Braves, and love them to death. Bobby Cox is a big reason why. When I think Braves, there are so many thoughts that come to me, but Bobby Cox may be the first thing that pops into my head, and to know he won?t be in the dugout next year is heartbreaking. I was born in ?95 (WS CHAMPS BABY!) and have loved the Braves and Bobby ever since(: The thing that I will remember most about Bobby is his loyalty to his players. I bought the Bobby Cox commemorative program earlier this season, and that was what the Braves players appreciated most. Bobby is out there arguing for his players no matter what the score, what the situation, or anything like that, he will always be there for them. I?m sure that nothing means more to those players. Next Braves manager has some big shoes to fill, and I?m fairly certain they never will be(: Bobby Cox is the best manager in baseball, and I can?t wait to see (and hopefully be there) when he gets inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame! I’ve been a Braves fan since 1967 when I was 7 years old… and that’s thru some lean years and some great years… but to be a true fan, you have to ride the roller coaster and experience it all, and not regret it. And I don’t regret a second from that time to this time, and most of it was spent with the Braves being under the leadership of Bobby Cox in one way or another.
We will never see another manager like Bobby Cox in Atlanta, or anywhere else for that matter. Those that know him best, and personally, attest time after time about this man’s knowledge of baseball and more importantly about his way of making everyone in the organization, from ushers to All Stars, feel like they are a vital part of the success that the team has enjoyed. He gives all the praise to others in winning, and puts all the blame for the losses on himself… it takes quite a man to do that. In the years to come, all of us Braves fans will realize more each season what we had in Bobby Cox all of these years. From the time Bobby returned to Atlanta as GM until today, the one constant piece of the entire successful puzzle is Bobby Cox… not any one player, front office person or owner… only Bobby Cox.
It’s sad to see it end, but for everything there is a season, and now it’s time for you to enjoy more of life, more of your family and more of doing what you want to do.

As a long time Atlanta Braves fan, I find it necessary to bid my personal farewell to you. As the skipper of your Atlanta Braves, you helped to build a dynasty that will never be forgotten. You have set a bar for veteran managers already in the league, as well as future managers.

I will never forget the worst-to-first season in 1991, when I was glued to my TV the entire month of October. There will never be another season like that. And of course, the World Championship in 1995 was the pinnacle and finally put Atlanta on the map as a winner. You are a class act, a gentleman, a wonderful ambassador for the game of baseball and definitely a player’s manager. I love the way you stick up for your guys, right or wrong (but you were right 99 percent of the time!). As a lifelong Braves fan, I want to thank you for what you’ve meant to me and my favorite team, and I’m going to miss you terribly. The dugout just won’t be the same without you in it. But before you officially start your retirement, I hope the Braves can add another World Series championship to your incredible resume. Good luck in the playoffs, and Happy Retirement!

Bobby I have been a Brave fan since 1956 and there have been alot of ups and downs, but your years there have been way more ups than downs. I sometimes wondered what you were thinking on some of your decisions and leaving pitchers in too long but in the long run you were right.

Retirement is a good thing
If there was ever a time I wanted to talk to a team it would be now. I would talk to these 2010 Braves and let them know that when they step out on the field Thursday night they are playing for Bobby. Give this man what he deserves.. A 2nd WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. I know they are beat up and injured but if playing for Bobby in his final year doesnt give them a spark then they are not human. Im 29 from Boston so naturally a red sox fan. However my grandfather also was a Boston Braves fan so I grew up watching the Braves through the 90’s on TBS.. When TBS actually played them all the time.. Now I have to drop 200 bucks for the package.. Anyway, GO BRAVES!!! THIS IS OUR YEAR!!!!

I am a DIEHARD Braves fan from upstate NY. I have been since I was 9 years old, which was the Braves first world series appearance in 1991. My Great Grandfather was a Braves fan at first because it was the only game that was on in our area, but later because of the class and professionalism of the organization. He has since passed, but I continue to watch every single game on MLB Extra Innings each year. You could say that the reason we continued to watch and later LOVE the Braves is due to what Bobby brought to the organization. It was his (along with Schuerholz and others) class, and structure that allowed the Braves to be the dynasty of the 90’s and early 00’s that they were by bringing unbridled leadership to every level of the Braves organization. I want to say, thank you Bobby, for doing things the right way and making me proud to be a Braves fan. I brought my 14 year old brother to Atlanta (Both our first trips) this summer for a 3 game series in part to continue our family tradition of being Braves fans, but also so he and I could see a Bobby Cox led baseball team before you left. Thanks for all of the years of making my and my families summers that much more enjoyable…
Bobby Cox is a class act and certainly will be hard to follow. I have been a Braves fan since 1990. It is hard to imagine the Braves without Bobby Cox. I had never had an opportunity to attend a game until 1995 game six of the World Series. You can imagine what a thrill that was for me. Bobby, I am just sorry I never had an opportunity to meet you in person and thank you and the Braves for giving a senior citizen so much pleasure for so many years. I hope you enjoy your retirement and may God bless you and your family.
Bobby, you made me like the game of baseball, to become the most die hard fan the Braves have! I’ve been a Brave fan since the age of 6 (1980), watching a lot of Braves games on TV from my hometown in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. I still live in Mexico and have traveled so many times to see Bobby and the Braves play (in AZ and CA, never at Turner Field), it will be sad not to see Bobby managing the Braves again. I truly enjoyed all the moments, and will continue to see the Braves, knowing Bobby will still be there, no matter what.

I once got a note on Braves stationary from someone with the same last name, Littlefield. I have watched you work your magic with the team. You are clearly the number one manager in all of MLB. It was when Ted Turner still owned the team and the games were broadcast every day into the Richmond, Va area that I developed interest in the Braves.
One of my sons lived in Atlanta and I made many trips to see the games.
Now, as you are phasing out your career I feel a sort of kinship with you. The docs told me recently they have done all they can for my bad heart. Thus at 84 I am in process of phasing out my own career, so to speak.
I wish you and your family peace and a long and happy life. You and the Braves pleasured me for many years. for which I thank you all.

My name is Barbara and I am 62 and have been a Braves fan for as long as I can remember. I use to laugh when i would watch a game and Ted and Jane would be in the stands eating all the time and at the time she had the fitness videos out which I owned every one of them. I thought when you got Chipper that was a great move cause at the time I was 27 and I thought he was cute. I loved Leo Mazzoni sitting there and rocking and of course Javier Lopez on the greatest catchers ever. I loved Brian McCann. He has so much heart. I want to thank you for so many great games and memories. In all the years I only got to go to one game and that was in 1996. The year after the world series and it was in August. I took my daughter Tammy for her 16th birthday and her wish was to get her ball signed by Chipper. That never happened but I did her on video tape with Javier Lopez and Andruw Jones hugging her and a sign that said Its my 16th birthday. What a day and we did win that game. You are a great human being and I do thank you for everything. I am sure there were a lot of tears in the dugout after the game but there were plenty of them in my house also. God Bless you in whatever you decide to do and I hope you have a say so in the new manager because of what you said about Lowe. If the new manager doesn’t support the players they will not have a good season.

I’ve been watching you and the Braves since I was 4 back in 1989. The Braves were my tee-ball team, so of course I had to root for you even though I grew up in NJ (in the heart of Mets/Yankees territory). I took a lot of grief throughout the years, but stood by you and the Braves all the way. I ended up being a pretty successful baseball player (4 years CF in college). The first time I was ever able to make it to Turner Field for a game was this past April 17th….and Ubaldo Jimenez threw a no hitter. Go figure. It was an incredible memory though and Heyward had a walk-off the next day.
Thanks for all the great times (and tough ones, like the past few nights). Hope to see you around the team.

I grew up watching the Braves on TV. Since I can remember, I’ve been a die-hard Braves fan. It didn’t matter if they lost or won, I was a fan. I didn’t want to believe it when I heard for the first time the #6 Bobby Cox was retiring. Bobby is the BEST manager any team could ask for, and the players, the fans and the City of Atlanta was blessed to have him as a part of the team. I can’t even imagine the Braves being managed by anyone other than the very own, Bobby Cox. Bobby, thanks for all you’ve done for this team, and making it such a memorable part of my life. I remember being a devastated 7 year old in Cleveland, Ohio in 1995 when the Braves won the World Series against the Indians… oh how times have changed! A couple of years later, my family moved to Atlanta, where I begrudgingly became a Braves fan after much internal conflict. 15 years later, I am a college graduate and a full-fledged and loyal Braves fan, and I am honored to say that I was able to witness your last game last night. Thank you for making this team what it is today- you are what I think of whenever the Braves are mentioned. You are the best manager in baseball, and we all will miss your enthusiasm and dedication. Bobby, I have been a Braves Fan since 1968, when my Dad took me to a game in Atlanta when I was 8. From that point on I frequently listened to games on the radio (imagine that!) from my home in Tennessee before the Braves became, in my mind, the best programming on TBS. The next game I attended was not until 1991, when I took my oldest Stepson and watched Tom Glavine beat the Giants in Atlanta despite giving up two solo Home Runs to Kevin Bass. Ron Gant had the game-winning hit in a 3-2 Game. I have been frustrated many times since that 1991 season but my love and support of the Braves will be with me until I retire from life.

Goodbye and Godspeed, Bobby. As a fan since 1972, I’ve had many, many happy times following the Braves and their downs and then ups under your leadership. Living in California since 1982, it’s been a long-distance affair, and when the amazing last-to-first move happened in 1991 I en joyed it from here on the West Coast. Last Friday night, I took my daughter to the game in SFO and, sitting among those rabid Giants’ fans, wearing my Braves shirt, we were thrilled with the comeback 5-4 win – what a night, and my first ever time to see you and the team in a playoff game! She and I will never forget it, and we thank you for the experience. Thanks, Bobby.

My first contact with baseball was in october of that year, in worls series against twins. I remember the passion which braves played, and inmediatelly became a Braves’ fan. My husband and I have been HUGE Braves our whole lives as we were raised by parents who were also Braves fans. If the Braves were playing we were watching or listening in the car. And even though things did not always go the way we wanted them to we would still tune in the next game and cheer on our Braves. So as the season ends it is hard to think of someone other than the great #6 sitting in the dugout rooting for his team to “take ball 4 kid”! We always wondered when a new player came to the team what name we would here you come up with to call him while at the plate. Well i can not believe that the day has come. I have been a baseball fan since i could remember but I know the day that I turned a BRAVE fan. We were the laughable braves in the west at the time and I rmeber seeing Bobby in the dugout in the top step waiting for the outcome of the game. The demeanor the stature that you represented and then as the years went on the way you fought every pitch, every call that didnt go our way. The way you made your players feel as you argued when you knew that they could not. Every player wishes they could have played for you because they knew that you would stand by them through the good and the bad. I know you dont know me and its hard for you or anyone to belive that even though I had not met you I look up to you and respect the way you went about your job with class. I know there is respect due to the men that you battled against the Torre, LaRussa but you are a man among boys in my eyes. Enjoy your vacation Bobby as you have earned. Where do I start with the admiration I have for you and the Atlanta Braves. I have learned so much from you. I have an autistic daughter and from you I have learned to ‘let her be the pitcher on the hill’ and not run to her rescue at the first sign of difficulty. Your patience and endurance is something we all can learn from.
At the close of the 2005 season, I wrote a poem about you that I would like to share with you. I hope it sums up how Braves Country feels about you.
The Darling of the Dugout

As long as I have been a Braves fan you have been the manager, its going to be weird not hearing you on TV encouraging your players in the batters box, especially the nicknames you have come up with for your players (my favorite one has to be “fookie” for Furcal) I’ve never heard another manager in major league baseball do that. Its kinda funny for being the most ejected manager in baseball history I can honestly say you are probaly the most beloved. Sure going to miss ya!!! So is the game of baseball!!!

I gotta tell you today is a tough day for me. When you came back to the Braves as skipper, I was brand new into the Air Force. Stationed in Oklahoma, I was always watching the Braves on TBS, continuing a habit that I had started a long time before that. I always thought the world of you as manager, and I thank you for everything that you did for the city of Atlanta and the Braves organization. You are truly as class act, as evidenced by the only time I ever got the honor of meeting you. A couple of years back, the last FanFest at the Ted, you were sitting with Kelly Johnson and Sid Bream. When my turn finally came in line to meet you, I didn’t even notice because I was talking football with another fan. My wife nudged me and says, “Bobby is waiting for you!” I felt embarassed because I had made you wait. To meet me. Anyway, you were as gracious as I had always heard that you were. I thanked you for the memories, and you told me to look forward to the upcoming year, so that maybe “we can provide you with some good new memories.” I was star struck.
Next year, when the Braves take the field, I am still going to be there… Watching every pitch, chopping as always. But, it won’t be the same without you there. I will always look to the dugout for the familiar number 6. Except there will be an empty seat there. But not with me. I will always cherish the years of baseball that you managed in Atlanta. While some seasons might not have been winning seasons, the team was always winning with me, because of you.

words cannot describe the sadness i am feeling as you leave the dugout. I remember when you replaced russ nixon, and the magic of 1991. i was there when greg olson leaped into smoltz’s arms, as justice caught the final out in ’91, as we watched the giants beat the dodgers, and the braves won the west. i fell in love then, and it hasn’t changed since. from the losses in the world series in 91 & 92, the WIN in 95, eric gregg’s outrageous strike zone in 97 against the marlins, the yankees in 96, 99, the padres in 98, the mets in 00, and the battles you waged in the 00’s. you handled the losses with grace and dignity, and the victories with humbleness and respect. i just cherish that my daughter got to see you in a uniform, and got to feel what I felt when i was a kid watching. you are the best. I would like to thank you for all the memories that you have provided us at the manager of one of the best franchises. I remember sitting at home with my father when I was younger, being allowed to stay up late for the first time to watch the NLCS in 1991 and seeing Bream slide home. I had been a fan ever since I can remember back in the 80’s and became a super fan in the 90’s. I was able to turn my sons on to baseball by watching your teams in the 2000’s.

Tough series with San Fran. but , hey, we did all we could with what we had left after some big injuries, which was truly remarkable that we got this far to put up such a fight. It is typical of your teams. My dad, born in 1966 when the Braves moved to Atlanta really introduced me to the Braves and I love them. I was ironically born in 1995 when the Atlanta Braves won their first World Series. I have really been into the Braves the past few years and have grown attatched. Bobby, you have been a gigantic part of my household. I am 21 years old, I have watched you since I was 10 years old. You and the Braves were my greatest influence as I played little league all the way up through his school and have been to a Braves vs. Reds game at least once a year when you all make it up this way. You made my grandmother get fired up as she watched you argue while Leo was rocking in the background of you. You really helped bring baseball into my family and helped me become a lifelong Braves fan. I cannot thank you enough and I know that the Atlanta organizational, while of course they will feel the loss of not having you there, will definitely continue to aspire to the greatness you helped them achieve so many times.

I was born in 1990 so I have never known another Braves manger but yourself. I never had the opportunity to meet you personally but by going to many, many, braves games and watching 90% of every season on television i feel like i know you. I remember when I was a young kid I absolutely loved watching you march out of that dugout when you didnt agree with the call the umps made. As i have grown up i have learned to love and respect the way you managed the braves. I can honestly say that you have turned the Braves organization into the most respected mlb team around. As young boy visiting Atlanta, I had an uncle and aunt that introduced me to the Braves. It was a passion sparked at young age. They collected AJC clippings, magaizines, and baseball cards and passed them along to their young nephew in Birmingham. With TBS, I spent time with Braves almost every night during the season. I became familar with the players’ faces and your even more familar voice from the dugout cheering them on. Although we have never met, like to many other Braves fans, you feel like family. My aunt and uncle have long sinced passed away, but the passion they provided me is something I treasure a great deal. Nights watching the Braves now allow me to remember them as I enjoy the many facets of the game.
You have been more than a great manager or even ambassador for the game of baseball. You will always be a connection to my youth, a reminder of family, and the link to my love for the Braves. I saw my first MLB game in 1982 at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, and fell in love with the Braves that day. I have missed very few games since that time, mostly on TV since I live in NC and Florida. You, Bobby, have been the face of the Braves for so long that I could not read the players’ and fans’ comments about your last game and retirement with a dry eye. I have been a Braves fan since elementary school. Everyone else here in Iowa is a Cardinals or a Cubs fan. I wanted to pick my own team. I choose the Braves and I chose Bobby as my coach. He is the only coach I’ve known. It will be very different watching the Braves without him in the dugout, or getting kicked out of games. I remember the times when I was quite young at Old Fulton Co Stadium when there were only a few thousand people in the stands to many sell outs this year at The Ted. I have been a fan of the Atlanta Braves since they first came to Atlanta in the 60’s. There have been some good managers throughout that time, but none were greater than Bobby. He has been a great role model for the young men who came through the club, and they should feel quite fortunate to have played for him. It’s so nice to have someone in the sports limelight who is a great role model. We can only wish for more like Bobby. It goes without saying that he has definitely earned some retirement time, but I know without a doubt that he will be sitting in the comfort of his living room next season, watching the game, and thinking about how to handle the club from a manager’s point of view. Thank you so much for all the wonderful memories. I have been a Braves fan since I was a little girl growing up in SC, and I would listen to Milo Hamilton and Ernie Johnson on the radio every night. I even had pictures of each of the players on the 1969 team plastered all over my door! I moved to Atlanta in 1976 to go to college and never left. I married my college sweetheart, and we moved out to Gwinnett County to raise our 3 sons ( we live in the same neighborhood that another famous Brave grew up in…). I was so sad the first time you left, and I told my co-workers at the time that it was the biggest mistake Ted ever made. I was thrilled when you came back, and especially when you got back to the dugout from your upstairs office. Having been a Braves fan since I was a 7 year old in 1966, I was so happy that you brought us so much joy with all the success you have had. As our sons grew up playing ball, they always looked up to you and the Braves teams you led. You gave us countless happy memories, and we are so very, very grateful for all the years you put in working so hard to give us the very best team possible each and every year. We were in the stadium for this last series, and it was so exciting, even though it was heartbreaking. Thanks for being such a wonderful leader, and for all the treasured memories you have given us along the way. We will miss you more than words can ever express. My dad and I have a special bond through our love of baseball (even though he’s had a much harder time as a lifelong Red Sox fan!), I remember watching the game that Jeff Blauser hit 4 homeruns with my grandfather before he passed away, I remember where I was when Sid slid, I have a mental image of John Smoltz on the mound as the team went from worst to first in ’91 and will never forget the moment in 1995 when the Braves won it all. I have been a braves fan all of my life. But I will remember fondly the last 20 years. The Braves have made me cry with joy and sadness, but it has all been worth it. I have been sitting on the edge of my seat for all these years. I was there when the Braves beat the Astros in 1990 to start their run as the best in baseball. I worked for the Braves in the 1980’s and have always enjoyed being at the ballpark. My family and I are luck enough to have watched the Braves and their wonderful manager for the past 20 years. Thanks for the memories and looking forward to seeing you at the ballpark for years to come. You are truly a class act. Atlanta has been blessed to have you as a part of their organization. I’m with the generation born in the 80’s that has grown up a Braves fan and watched Bobby Cox our entire lives. Cox and the Braves is all we have seen which makes for a great connection of team, coach and fan.

Bobby is much more than a manager or sports figure. He has become a role model and an architype for young athletes across the country. Bobby’s soft-spoken demeanor and respect for the game and the people around him are unheard of anymore. I have been lucky enough to call myself a Braves fan for as long as I can remember. I suffered through the rotten 80’s as a fan. I almost came out of my skin in 1991 when they clinched a spot in the playoffs. Thank you Bobby for all the fantastic years and memories. You definitely do leave behind a legacy as you move into retirement. That legacy is everywhere you look on the Braves organization. Much more than that, you have left an impression upon professional sports that will take many many years to be faded.
My father taught me baseball. Bobby Cox taught me to love Atlanta Braves baseball.
A few weeks back I found myself becoming emotionally wrapped up in the Braves?..more than usual I should say??well it didn?t take me long to realize that Bobby Cox and Braves baseball bring me fond thoughts of my late father.
I played baseball from the time I could walk up until the beginning of high school. My father taught me to play and never missed a game. We went to Braves games together. The playoffs when they came to Atlanta. The World Series when possible. It was our time.
Having spent a good part of the past few weeks at The Ted and certainly the last two nights I must pass along my thoughts.
I couldn?t be more proud to have witnessed Bobby?s last season. We should be proud of what our Braves accomplished. I am proud of Bobby and I am proud of Brooks Conrad. Bobby managed my Braves for 25 of my 37 years. He made Atlanta proud and our nation proud. Over the past few weeks I spoke with fans who had travelled from Arkansas, New York, Miami, California, Hawaii and London, UK to see Bobby. The award goes to my friend Tim who travelled from London to catch his first MLB games and more importantly to see Bobby. Braves country is everywhere!
I can only hope that this message somehow finds its way to Bobby and Brooks! You have made me proud! My father would have been thrilled.
I spent some time with my father this morning. It was the natural thing to do.

My husband and I never miss watching a Braves game on TV…we’re in NC, so it’s alittle far for us to see many games in person. Through the years we have watched as you brought the Braves from worst to first, and boy was it fun ! I don’t know how or if we’ll watch as much as before, because it won’t be the same without you in the dugout. We have the greatest respect for you, and love you like a family member. I’ve been a Braves fan since 1970, and I can still vividly remember the years when things were not so good. Thank you Bobby for bringing a winning attitude and spirit to this club, and for all the wonderful memories and success you’ve had here. When I heard as a boy that they were moving to Atlanta I was thrilled because Hamering Hank was coming to the South. I took my boy to see you and Murphy play and I been going when I could since. It has been a very emotiional time, hoping and praying for a win in each playoff game and knowing one of those could be the last time seeing you cheering on your players from the dugout. Living in upstate NY I could easily be a fan of our two baseball teams but never was. Back when Lemke joined the Braves, I started following the team as I worked with Mark’s father. I admired you from the start and have been a die hard fan throughout all the years. I watched all the games on TBS, then when that stopped, I would catch action on Gameday if not on national tv. If I lived in Atlanta, I would have been at every game. Fortunately, I did get to watch the Braves play the Twins in a pre-season game in Cooperstown but my greatest thrill was in Jan 07 when you came to Syracuse for a Hot Stove dinner. I was so excited to just be there to see and hear you speak, but when I got to meet and talk to you and get a photo of the two of us, that is a memory that will never be forgotten. Your illustrious career is second to none, but your personality and care for your players and fans is amazing. All year I have been thinking I can’t imagine watching a game without you there encouraging your players “Come on Kid” but with heavy heart will never stop supporting the Braves knowing you will be there in spirit. God bless Bobby, continued good health and enjoy your retirement. You certainly deserve it. Can’t wait for Cooperstown, I’ll be the first one there to see you inducted.

In 1966, when the Braves came to Atlanta from Milwaukee, I was under 10 years old but became a lifelong Braves fan. I never heard of Bobby Cox as a player, or a coach, for the Yankees; but I watched the Yankees on TV, each Saturday, it seemed, until the Braves moved to town. Who would’ve thought that a 25 year-old minor league player at the time would one day be the Braves’ best manager and my hero?
At my first postgraduate job interview–in Atlanta, in 1976, I got the job, I believed, when I answered one last question, relating to perseverance, “I’ve been a Braves fan since ’66, through the good times and the bad, but I will always love them and know that they will be winners one day.” Only a decade and a half later, after marriage and the birth of two sons did you, Bobby Cox, turn my 30 year hope into reality!
My first son could name the Braves’ starting lineup when he was just two years old, and my second son saw the Braves first at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium while still in diapers! When we moved to North Carolina, before their starting to school, I kept them fans of “America’s Team” through TBS. We shared the joy, in 1995, a World Series Championship, with you and the Braves while they attended middle school.
Luckily, we also attended Durham Bulls games, the AA farm team of the Braves (at that time), where many of your draft recruits, while General Manager, played on the way to “The Show.” In other words, throughout their formative years, our sons thought of Bobby Cox and the Atlanta Braves as synonymous. We–a young father and his two sons–could not have had any better hero than Bobby Cox. Thank you.

I really followed them closely when you arrived, the way that you handled the players and pitchers was spectacular. The game of baseball is a lot worse off since you decided to hang up the spikes.

It’s hard to believe that you won’t be standing on that rail or sitting intensely inside the dugout anymore, or coming out to support your players after a bad call. I’ve been a Braves fan since I was 12(early 80s) and remember what it was like to route for a team who didn’t seem to win too much. Then all of that changed in the 90s and what a wonderful ride it has been. It’s a different feeling when you’ve never been a fair-weather fan and then you’re finally rewarded for it. My husband and I met you on a road trip in St. Louis. We were having breakfast when my husband came and told me that you had just come out of your room for coffee. I was in disbelief and remembered thinking I didn’t want to bother you(especially since the night before we had lost to the Reds). Very nervous, I couldn’t resist saying hello. You were so kind to take a moment to speak with us. I admire your skills and flexibilty as teacher, trainer, and manager. I especially admire the humility you have always shown. I will definitely miss watching you guide our team. I hope that you will write a book that shares your experiences and highlights your memories. You have led by example and have positively influenced so many players, coaches, and fans. I am proud that I am an Atlanta Braves fan and supporter of this organization. Wish you the best always. I have been a Braves fan since 1956, where at the age of 4, I watched the Milwaukee Braves beat the Chicago Cubs. Black and White Game of the week at its finest. Since then I have seen the good years and the bad, including the 14 year run of outstanding Braves baseball. 2010 marked a great year with perhaps your most difficult managerial task due to injuries, pitching rotations, lack of offensive production, and a meriad of rookies having to fill big shoes. I wish to express my sincere thanks to you for every one of the 158 ejections, showing your players and your fans that the umpires are not always right. I love to see you stand up for your players. Certainly Cooperstown will greet you with open arms when that first ballot day comes. We will all miss hearing you yelp from the dugout “C’mon Kid”. Thanks for all the joyful memories and tragic one run losses. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the greatest manager of this era lead the Atlanta Braves all these years. TBS and MLB extra innings have made living in NJ bearable. Go Braves, beat those Mets. Let’s make sure you stay vocal from the front office.

Thank you Bobby for your many years of service to the Atlanta Braves and all us fans. Its been a true pleasure to watch someone whos as good as you are at there job. From what I have read it would be very hard to find more than a handful of players who would say a bad word about you which says even more than we fans can. I hope you enjoyed your 25 years in the Bravos uni as much as we did. I dont know of any player who would not say you stood up for them and that created a foxhole mentality that I think served your teams more than most understand.

What a GREAT organization the Braves have become over that time, and I certainly believe you are responsible for most of that. The organization is now one of the most respected and regarded as one of the classiest teams in the game. Like you, I have always loved the game of baseball, I learned so much from you… one of the most important things being; not to get too high during the highs and not to get too low during the lows. No doubt your players as well as your colleagues all respected that. Your calm, steady, and passionate approach to each and every game [ each pitch and every at bat ] has made you the best manager of all time!! My dream was not only to play professional baseball, not only to play for the braves, but to play for the legendary Bobby Cox! Dear Bobby,
I have been a fan since birth and I was born in Philadelphia. My father is a native Atlantan and he brought me up the right way. I saw my first Braves game at Veterans Stadium and we beat those Phils. As I got older and we moved back to Atlanta I embraced this team and came to Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and Turner Field after it so many times I can’t count.
I love this team, I love the intensity you brought on the field everyday. I love the way you stand up for your players. We will miss you and the people who say otherwise just don’t understand the game. At the basic level these players are normal average people and you’ve got to be able to read them to coach them.

I remember my first Braves game….
My dad took me to Fulton County Stadium and Dale Murphy hit a homerun, I was hooked from that point on.
I am a huge Braves fan. I remember a few bad years in the late ’80’s when I was a kid, but it didn’t matter. It was basball and it was my team! I have been fortunante enough to see the Braves go through a very successful long run, and it all started with you Bobby. The joy watching your teams play and how you managed your players has been special to watch.
It not just the winning…it is the way you handled yourself and your players. Everyone should strive to be like you. You are a thoughtful, caring person, who knew how to get the best out of someone. You did it the right way. And I’m willing to bet everyone you have had contact with in your life time is better person because of you.

We have planned all our vacations around Braves games and I can’t imagine not hearing you calling the boys “kid” from the dugout. I lost my job last week after informing my employers that I had to have the last week of June and first of July off to go to SD and Seattle for the games. They refused to give me the time off and let me go…Some things are more important than working for unhappy people. I was born in 89, so I litterally have grown up watching the continual dominance of the Braves over the last several seasons. my brothers and I grew up each having our own guy who we pretended to be in the backyard pickup games (mine was Javy Lopez). This passed year was difficult for my family as we lost my grandfather and my brother to death. As painful as this past year has been, I still found myself watching Braves games on TV just like I had my whole life and it felt as if my granddad and brother were right there as we had spent every summer and so many falls. Congratulations on the return to post-season play that had defined baseball in Atlanta. I hope you enjoy your retirement. please know that you will always be apart of the Braves family and just like losing my family has changed my way of viewing the braves, I know that it wont be the same without you next year, but i look forward to the season anyway.

If you’ve seen the movie The Fan where Robert Dinero is obsessed with the Wesley Snipes’ character and the San Francisco Giants, that’s me with The Atlanta Braves (in a nice way of course) 🙂 I’ve been living in New York for 30-Years and have been a Braves Fan for 20-years and counting and will always be. I was there on October 11, 2010 where Mr. Cox managed his last game and yes it was sad… Does anyone know where I can buy a Time Machine so I can go back to 1991 and start it all over? Mr. Cox I know your now a consultant so please make sure you give advice to Mr. Fredi Gonzalez so he can continute The Dynasty for another 50-Years! Your The Best!

I’m not going to sit here and talk about how great of a manager Bobby is because we all now that. I want to thank him for great memories unfortunately i was born in ’87 so they are limited. All i remember groing up in the 90’s was after church on sunday i’d go to my grandparents house and eat lunch and watch the Braves play. My grandfather passed away and i can say the best memories i had with him was enjoying watching the braves every sunday on TBS. Thank You Bobby!!! What a great Career!!! GO BRAVES!!

I moved to GA in 1991 when I first started teaching. I began to follow the Braves during that year. You are the only manager that I have known, and I cannot imagine the Braves dugout without you. Best wishes always. Please know you will be missed more than you know.
Since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the mysterious and humbling game of baseball. I have always had a love for the game and its players.
In the eyes of the game, I will always be that kid with a dream. A dream of walking onto that baseball field and playing in the game I love. Representing my team and family with honor. Booby Cox did just that. Bobby has been an icon who sparked my passion for the game. His example, taught me to respect the game and to be patient with winning.
As I watched the Braves in 2010, I saw something very special. I saw an iconic manager say farewell, and become a part of history one last time. Watching Bobby Cox at his best, was inspiring and forever memorable. His humble approach and patience with the players will set an example for years to come.
Thank you for your hard work and dedication throughout the years with the Atlanta Braves. You are at the foundation of my Braves patronage, and I will be always be grateful.

I remember I was 7 years old in 1995 and i picked the braves to win the World Series. They are my favorite team then and they still are today.
Then 12 years later, when I officially turned 19, my sister bought me a present that i could never forget. Braves tickets. I was so happy that i was going to my dream place i wanted to go since i was child. Turner Field.
I got 4 autographs, one before and three after the game and at that time i was the game, John Smoltz was pitching against Tom Glavine and Smoltz got his 200th Career win.
I was there and i will never forget the memories when Bobby Cox was the braves manager before and throughout my generation.
Bobby, you made the braves into a team that nobody will ever forget. 14 Straight NL East titles 5 Pennants and a World Series title. Neither team in baseball nor any sport has won 14 straight.
Bobby you will always be remembered as the only guy that also hit an inside the park grand slam when in my mother’s generation and in my life you will be remembered as a genuine manager in your players, your team, your fans and the entire Braves organization.
I will miss you Bobby Cox. I hope you enjoy retirement for the rest of your life. All the best for you.

I know i’m a little late, but I want to show my appreciation. I’m an 18 year old Braves fan from Wisconsin. There are two things that throughout my life that were consistant with Braves baseball. Three really. Bobby Cox, Chipper Jones, and greatness. I think my most cherished memory of the Bobby Cox era, would be that for the first 15 years of my life, the Braves won their division, proving they were a force to be reckoned with.
